Archivo Histórico del Agua

When we began exploring the documentary collections of the Departamento General de Irrigación, we never imagined the wealth we would discover. What was initially an investigation into the political history of water in Mendoza, using the resources of the Water Library, transformed into a project that illuminated decades of institutional memory. These documents, many of them still active, showed us how the past remains indispensable for solving current problems and planning new projects. From that first encounter, we set ourselves an ambitious goal: to make this heritage visible and organized, turning it into an accessible tool for society and academia.
The Archivo Histórico del Agua (Historical Water Archive) was officially established in 2018, but its history goes back much further. Thanks to the collaborative work between researchers and DGI staff, we began a process that involved identifying, cataloging, and making sense of a set of dispersed materials. It was a continuous learning process, with no prior training in archiving, but with the commitment to building something meaningful. Today, this archive not only preserves the history of water in Mendoza, but also represents the fruit of a collective effort that continues to grow with each new discovery and challenge.
